League of Women Voters of the Montclair Area Home Page
We are excited that we have been serving our communities for 98 years.
Our LWV as well as the LWV US and LWVNJ were formed in 1920, when women obtained the the right to vote after almost 100 years of fighting for that right.
Because the League was founded as an outgrowth of the movement that secured women the right to vote, it aimed to help new voters engage with their government.
Today, the League empowers all voters to improve their local, state and national government.
This brief video highlights how the League of Women Voters, at local, state and national levels, is promoting democracy and civic engagement. With democracy and voting rights under attack it is critical that the League provide a strong, diverse voice for the people.
- The League of Women Voters is a community based organization that has worked since 1920 to improve our government and engage all citizens in the decisions that impact our lives.
- The League is nonpartisan, which means we don't endorse candidates or political parties. Community volunteers operate at national, state and local levels through more than 800 state and local Leagues, in all 50 states as well in DC, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Hong Kong.
- Formed from the movement that secured the right to vote for women, the centerpiece of the League's activities remains to expand participation and give a voice to all Americans. We do this starting right here in the Montclair Area, by engaging in educational efforts and forums on issues our community cares about.
- Our League - the League of Women Voters of the Montclair Areas - serves the areas in which our members reside. Currently that includes serving the people of Bloomfield, The Caldwells, Essex Fells, Glen Ridge, Montclair, Verona, West Orange.
